How to connect an external mic to Yi 4k Action camera | mic cable adapter

In this video I will show you how to connect an external mic to Yi Xiaomi action camera the 4k plus with USB c connector

A bit about the Yi 4k camera plus. This is an action camera. It does film in 4k but I rarely use it since the 1080 and 720p look awesome by themselves. The small form factor is truly a winner because i can carry it around to many different places and its not heavy to lug around at all. It uses Micro SD card, for this camera I decided to go with a Lexar SDHC 32 g card which is more than plenty for any long filming event or vlog.

The audio is were things are not so great. The internal mic is ok but not very good once you step into an open area with wind. I experience some very bad hiss and distortion when using this outdoors.

Compared to its previous version of the camera, this one allows the use of an external microphone which makes things a lot better. Although this is not what I would consider great audio it is far better than the internal mic.

The external mic featured in the video is a Sony lavalier mic in stereo. It uses a special cord provided by Xi company to connect the audio. I did find that the cable is a bit difficult to find. I had to search deep into ebay and Amazon to find anything that came close.

Tutorial how to connect external Mic

Why should I use an external mic?

  • Capture cleaner audio
  • The raw sound can be edited much easier with audio editing programs
  • External mics can be used to close proximity of the audio source
  • Camera intermnal mics can often produce low noise or hum
  • Lavalier mics can easily be hidden
  • For interviews, you often want to have an exteranl mic to here your subject talking
  • External mics often reproduce a much better sound quality

Action cameras in particular are made with the image quality and stabilazation as the main things to showcase. because they are action camera the audio is always an after thought since the main feature is not to capture fantastic audio but a good picture and solid stability.

Chicago Domination Fest

The challenge of taking live concert photos is all the movement and changing lights. For this concert I used my Canon 60d with an adapted Nikon lens, 50mm. These particular shoots were with the flash and a technique called dragging the shutter.

A local and well known photographer name John Mourlas takes photographs using this very technique and it was thru watching him that I got the inspiration to try it out.

Why drag the shutter?

Dragging the shutter creates an artistic affect that can give your photo a distinctive look.

How can try this method?

You can achieve this effect by using a DSLR camera and setting the TTL in flash settings. The setting will set off the shutter and fire the flash after, this will create light trails. If you do it just right you’ll get a nice effect to your photos.
